Mercato Monti - The original weekend market
Monti has become a new haven for many things: vintage and sartorial clothes, custom furniture or any kind, artisan jewellery, funky foodie spots, and much more. However, before it became all this and before it all became almost a little too much for appearing real and authentic, Mercato Monti had since long begun setting up its stalls.
The market is located in a public mess hall and offers young entrepreneurs free stall space for exhibiting their merchandise, handmade, bought or collected as it may be. The focus is distinctly vintage/artisan with several vintage clothes stands with some cool stuff but generally “the usual”.
The really great stuff is in the handmade section where you can admire and buy (the prices generally range from low to accessible) beautiful jewellery made with the most disparate materials (think delicately coloured wood and brass, woven silver thread, or funky plexi-glass), hand painted silk shirts, personalized letter paper, adorable baby clothes, collectors cufflinks and oh so much more.
The best thing about the market is that every weekend the exhibitors change, some are rather steady but many change or rotate, making for different discoveries every time. Naturally, the market follows the hours of its clientele, opening at 10:00 and closing at 20:00 giving everyone the possibility to pop by at any time on either Saturday or Sunday.
Markets like Mercato Monti have become ubiquitous, however Monti is characterized by the fact that exhibitors don’t pay for the stall space, meaning that (most) of the money they earn goes directly into their pockets, making it a great opportunity for local makers and artists, and for ourselves to feel like little artisan patrons.
