Caffè Propaganda - Sensory delights in black and white

Caffè Propaganda - Sensory delights in black and white

The result of the combination three roman enterpreneurs famed for their previous endeavours in the world of Roman gastronomics and nightlife, Caffè Propaganda, located behind the Coliseum, presents itself as an eclectic mix of styles.

Intended as a meeting point for winding down in the afternoon over some tea and macarons, or up in the evening with custom cocktails made by Desiré and George. For famished travellers the kitchen provides fragrant remedies around the clock of its opening hours.

Styled with the roaring twenties of Paris in mind, the chequered floors, tiled walls and arched ceilings reflect an era of invention and curiosity, two elements that are closely linked to the gastronomic ambitions of the Bistrot.

The idea is to promote (hence the name propaganda, not in any way to be connected to either wing of populism) a different way of looking at, and consuming food. Not your usual low-carb, raw or slow food gig, but presenting the client with traditional dishes with sometimes untraditional ingredients, such as the Cacio & Pepe, a typically Roman pasta dish, prepared with Sarawak pepper, giving the traditionally somewhat heavy cheese and pepper dish an unusually refreshing note.

The possibility of relishing in sweet delights sprung from chef patissier Stephane Betmon’s imagination, a plate of freshly sliced prosciutto and cheese wish a glass of carefully selected wine, or a quick salad lunch with duck ham and wild berries, in whichever moment strikes your fancy, removes any temporal barriers of what food is considered appropriate at any given hour. The central concern becomes our own state of mind and what kind of gastronomical balm we desire to enhance or mitigate it.

Caffè Propaganda, with its liberal approach, tries to show us the importance of grasping the moment with all the sensory experiences connected to it, because alas, we are sensory beings, something not even the proximity of the Vatican city can appease, which, on second thought, is most likely for the better. Especially when it can teach us the machinations between body and mind, by the means of maritozzo flavoured macarons.
