MAXXI
This museum is like a slice of modernity amidst the classical treasures. It’s really two museums in one, part architecture, part art, and was designed by the Iraqi born architect Zaha Hadid who wanted to give the city an influx of contemporary designs to complement the opulent - yet so typically roman Roman- Baroque and renaissance styles.
The museum’s permanent collection includes works by Anish Kapoor and Francesco Clemente and the archives of architects Pier Luigi Nervi and Carlo Scarpa. In addition to the galleries there is a library, media library, café, bar and restaurant, and spaces for performances and temporary exhibitions. The museum garden has become a natural point for afternoon chats, and childrens play while the parents grab a coffee in the on site bar. It has become a prime example of how an institution can grow beyond its scope and integrate in the daily life of a neighbourhood.
