minimum fax - Italians at their Best

The world of independent publishing in Italy is extremely lively, although, like elsewhere, the competition of gargantuan market leaders is fierce. That’s exactly what makes realities like minimum fax such a sight for sore eyes. The relatively young publishing house, it just turned 21, is one of the most flourishing and lively independent publishing realities in Italy at the moment.

Their success depends partly on their translations and publications of great foreign names such as Raymond Carver, Bukowski and Cohen, however they are a bastion for Italian narrative and essay writers. A decade after the founding, the editors opened a little bookshop in the middle of Trastevere, right on the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. The shop is tiny and despite being the main showroom for their books, only one bookshelf is dedicated to their own publications, while the rest of the shop is dedicated to a well cured selection of other independent publishers.

Every week, generally on Wednesdays, they host readings in order to discuss, publicize or simply enjoy listening to an author presenting his work. The library is open daily from 10:00 until midnight, making it a perfect stop at any hour for those desiring to delve into contemporary Italian culture and literature.

The location of the shop may appear somewhat random, in the middle of a neighbourhood which is famed for its authenticity but that slowly senses the need to seek its roots in ever more hidden away alleys, making minimum fax appear like a cultural lighthouse in a sea of tourists on tour, tipsy teens and the generally hurried life of the well visited area. However, a visit to this little haven is one of the best ways for getting to know a slice of what’s really going on in contemporary Italy and Rome, behind the overly commercialized Colosseum, pizza and spaghetti.*
