The Art of the Brick - LEGO beyond imagination

The Art of the Brick - LEGO beyond imagination

When shown a room full of LEGO, one quickly notices that there are two kinds of people. Those who shudder in fear of stepping on the devilish little plastic bricks; and those who squeal with joy at the idea of building something entirely beyond imagination. Nathan Sawaya clearly belongs to the latter group.

The NYC lawyer-turned LEGO artist has made an art of creating sculptures from the colourful plastic pieces, rendering them innocuous to our feet but might give dangerous ideas to any ambitious child (small or big). Art of the Brick has gathered great acclaim in all of the cities the exhibition has visited: New York, Cincinnaty, London, Singapore, Paris and several more.

The exhibition attracts with its unusual tone, the strange mix of an object we all clearly connect to our childhood takes the form of Rodin’s Thinker, The Mona Lisa and the Venus of Milo. However, Sawaya isn’t simply a cover artist, many of the works are sprung from his own imagination. Walking through the exhibition arouses a strange the artistic hubris of seeing well-known pieces of art formed with something that “I used to do as well”. Perhaps, but the wonder lies partly in the tenacity and careful planning it must have taken to build the sculptures that, in total, include over 1 million single LEGO pieces.

Art of the Brick is clearly geared towards both big and small visitors, including a game room at the end to give an outlet to all the childhood inspirations that finally appear in a different light.

The exhibition is now held at the Auditorium EXPO. Open daily until 26/03/2017.
