Le Sorelle – Two Sister’s Creative Kitchen
In a side street behind the Spanish Steps, this snug little restaurant of barely 40 seats, with vaulted ceilings that vaguely resemble those of a wine grotto, the sisters Ivana and Raffaella Talacci (the “sorelle”) reign supreme, aided by their mother Luciana.
Born and raised in the Roman culinary tradition their approach to the culinary arts combines creativity and hospitality without any pretences of formality, making their guests feel as though entertained by good friends, which Ivana and Raffaella insist on being a central part of the Italian culinary experience. The casual setting can mislead, but the fragrant dishes that arrive at the table have been created with the utmost care. Chef Erio Ivaldi, who previously has worked with stellar chefs in Paris, London and Naples, creates his menus together with the sisters with the aim to surprise and seduce.
The dishes are innovative and creative renderings of traditional Roman and Mediterranean (but not only) cuisine. They are fresh and delightful combinations of flavours which in the European tradition would be far apart, but that mingle delightfully under Ivana and Raffaella’s guidance.
The tradition remains strong in their preparations; however, it is that touch of pistachio on the lamb rack, or the ginger with the traditional baked chicken, that enhances the flavours in a manner that strengthens and elevates otherwise well-known bites.
In line with the grotto-like look of the restaurant, the sisters keep an excellently stocked wine list with only their personal favourites and they are more than happy to help their clients match the perfect drops to their meal. The grappas, which, like the wine, are rigorously chosen according to the production year, are well represented on the wine list, with a more than satisfactory number of Berta Grappas, one of the most renowned grappa distilleries in Italy.
A visit to the two sisters Ivana and Raffaella is highly recommended, it provides a glimpse into a modern and homely roman kitchen, in the middle of one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods of Rome.
